Poetry Inside Every Child

Very young children speak in poetry. They often just need their words caught  and written down. Sometimes they actually rhyme and have meter, but most often not. Reading poetry together inspires poetry writing. Writing poetry together helps children express their poetry. And exploring types of poetry melds these together.

If you take any of these types of poetry and do a search on line adding the words “with children” you will get more ideas than you can accomplish in a life time.

Publishing a child’s poetry may be the most important aspect of all


Slap a magnet on it and hang it on the refrigerator door if you can’t do any of the following.

A lot of us had to knock on the door, but the fairy never answered.

Enter it in a contest.

Copy it onto Facebook.

Send it to Grandma and Grandpa.

Write it in a blank book of Collected Poems of ___ (your child’s name.)

Make it into a book with a line or two of the poem on each page. Use clip art or your child’s drawings to illustrate it.

Send it to Highlights Magazine or another child’s magazine that publishes poetry.

Make a beautiful copy, frame it, and hang it on the wall.



Publishing poetry says to a child, “You are a poet.” I have not met a child who was not.  e.e. cummings said, “down they forgot as up they grew…” Help your child keep the poet title.

Li’l Sis is three. If you ask her, “Do you write poetry?” She will say, “Yes.”
